What water reference does this calculator use?

The National Academies established adult Adequate Intakes for total water of about 3.7 liters per day for men and 2.7 liters per day for women. Total water includes plain water, other beverages, and moisture in food.

U.S. intake data used for the report suggested beverages contributed about 3.0 liters for men and 2.2 liters for women, roughly 80% of total water. Pregnancy uses 3.0 liters total water and lactation uses 3.8 liters.

Adequate Intake is a reference, not a minimum or exact requirement. Climate, activity, diet, body size, health, and sweat loss can change individual needs.

How the hydration estimate works

Daily beverage estimate = base beverage reference + exercise adjustment + environment buffer

Exercise minutes are multiplied by the selected 0.4, 0.6, or 0.8 liter-per-hour rate. That range reflects the large variation in sweat rates and the need for individualized exercise hydration.

The environment selection adds a transparent planning buffer. It is not a National Academies requirement and should not replace sweat-rate measurement for long, intense, or hot sessions.

Exercise hydration and sweat rate

For a personalized sweat-rate estimate, compare nude or dry-clothing body weight immediately before and after exercise, then account for fluid consumed and urine produced. One kilogram of body-weight loss is approximately one liter of fluid.

During long exercise, drinking far more than sweat loss can be dangerous. Electrolyte and carbohydrate needs depend on duration, sweat sodium, intensity, conditions, and the individual. Runners can use the pace calculator separately to compare workout duration and pace.

  2. Enter age and select the adult reference profile.
  3. Enter planned daily exercise that is likely to cause sweating.
  4. Select a low, middle, or high exercise fluid rate.
  5. Choose the closest environment planning adjustment.
  6. Select Calculate Water Intake and review both beverage and total-water estimates.

Limitations and safety

The calculator cannot measure hydration, sweat rate, electrolyte loss, kidney function, medication effects, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or occupational heat exposure. Heat and dehydration can also affect exercise heart rate, so treat values from the heart rate zone calculator as estimates rather than hydration indicators.

Seek urgent help for confusion, severe headache, repeated vomiting, fainting, seizures, or other serious symptoms during or after heat exposure or endurance activity.
