What is a calorie calculator?
A calorie calculator estimates how much food energy an adult may need per day. This tool first estimates maintenance energy (TDEE), then adjusts that number for the selected gradual weekly weight-change plan.
The output is a planning estimate. It cannot account perfectly for metabolism, food tracking error, adaptive changes, medications, medical conditions, or differences in daily movement.
How does the calorie calculator work?
The calculator estimates resting energy with Mifflin-St Jeor or revised Harris-Benedict, multiplies that estimate by the selected activity factor, and then applies the chosen weekly weight-change adjustment.
Daily planning adjustment = weekly change × 3,500 ÷ 7
Daily calorie estimate = maintenance calories + adjustment
A negative weekly change creates a deficit; a positive change creates a surplus. The 3,500-calorie rule is a simple planning approximation and does not model metabolic adaptation.
Choosing a weekly goal
CDC guidance notes that people who lose weight gradually—about 1 to 2 pounds per week—are more likely to keep it off than people who lose weight faster. That does not mean 2 pounds per week is appropriate for every adult.
The calculator blocks any selected combination that produces less than 1,000 calories per day and asks for a slower goal. Even above that level, a calculated target may be inappropriate for an individual. A registered dietitian or qualified clinician can help set a safer personalized plan.
How to use the calorie calculator
- Choose U.S. or metric units.
- Enter age and select the sex coefficient used by the equation.
- Select a resting-energy equation.
- Enter current height and weight.
- Choose a typical activity level and weekly plan.
- Select Calculate Calories and review the target, maintenance estimate, adjustment, and projection.
Understanding the result
The large number is the estimated daily calorie level associated with your selected plan. Maintenance is the estimated TDEE before the adjustment. The four-week weight is a mathematical projection only; normal water changes alone can move scale weight by several pounds.
If real average weight trends differ from the projection, the activity estimate, food tracking, or the simplified model may not match your circumstances. Avoid reacting to a single weigh-in.
Limitations and safety
Online calorie equations are least appropriate when health conditions, medication changes, significant recent weight loss, competitive sport, recovery, or clinical nutrition needs are involved. The calculator also does not evaluate diet quality or nutrient adequacy.
Calories are only one part of nutrition. A macro calculator can divide the estimate among protein, carbohydrate, and fat, but current U.S. dietary guidance still emphasizes nutrient-dense foods and overall eating patterns.
