What does this withholding calculator estimate?
It estimates regular federal income tax for the year, compares that with withholding already taken and your current per-paycheck amount, then shows a simple target amount for the remaining paychecks.
How is the target calculated?
The target equals estimated annual regular federal income tax minus federal withholding already taken, divided by the number of paychecks remaining. A result of zero means the simplified model does not require additional regular federal withholding to cover the estimated tax.
Is this the same as the official IRS Tax Withholding Estimator?
No. The official IRS estimator collects more information, accounts for more tax provisions and can produce Form W-4 recommendations. This page is a faster planning estimate.
When should withholding be reviewed?
The IRS recommends checking withholding after major changes such as a new job, income changes, marriage, divorce, a new child or other events that affect tax liability.
